RACING Southern Horses Show Speed At Riccarton
Rondabdle, Royal Estate, and Castle Flight showed they were fit southern sprinters for engagements at Trentham in their gallops on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday. Of the “locals,” none impressed more than Magician, which is being prepared for the Gloaming Stakes on the second day of the Wellington Cup meeting.
RondabeMe. ridden by M. J. Skelton, sped in from the three furlongs in 35. It was a gaitop to surprise and; please her trainer, R. Heasley, for she seldom much of her speed in training. She is in the Wellington Stakes on Saturday and may improve the strong record of three-year-olds in the race. Castle Flight (M. J. Skelton) was going well with a lead at a neck over Hullabaloo (C. T. Wilson) at the end of five furlongs. They ran the first furlong fairly slowly, but dashed in from the half-mile in 48 2-5. Castle Flight will run against the open sprinters on the second day at Trentham. He will be ridden by the Riccarton light-weight. A. H. East wood, who was tais rider in his runaway James Hazlett Gold Cup victory at Trentham last month. Royal Estate (C. T. Wilson ) Jed Apache (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) by half a length after running five furlongs in 1:0 3-5, the last four in 48. Royal Estate is a fit light-weight for the Anniversary Handicap on Saturday. Keen Run Picea Leigh (Messent) beat On Account (Swanson) from the half-mile by three-quar-ters of a length in the fastest time of the morning for the distance—47 3-5. Picca Leigh was keen to get going, and her saddle worked forward early in the gallop. She is one of the light-weights in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. Depending (Wilson) drew attention to her fitness for Trentham engagements when die sprinted seven furlongs in 1:28. She was joined near
the three furlongs by her stablemate Seaend (Beck), which ran down the straight keenly and won the gallop by a neck. Depending ran the opening half-mile in 48 4-5. Shakes (Messent) and Donna Gola (M. J. Skelton) sprinted half a mile in 50 2-5. Shakes has a solid record at a mile and may be hard to beat in the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Marlow (Moir) and Mygrid (Cowles) were on terms finishing a mile in 1:46 4-5, the last half-mile in 52 4-5. Marlow is in the highweigtrt at Trentham on Saturday. This will be his first race since his highweight victory at Hororata on December 14. Royal Leigh (McCann) finished his work by running half a mile keenly in 50. Mossburn (Campbell) followed in 52 4-5, and Winkler (Beck) recorded 50 3-5. Course Gallops Magician (M. J. Skelton), Mhor (Wildermoth), and Valuate (Finlayson) started slowly near the mile on the outside of the course proper but quickened sharply to run in from the seven furlongs in 1:29 2-5. They recorded 50 1-5 for the last half-mile. Vitamise (Stokes) and Marlborough (Beck) sprinted six furlongs in 1:18 2-5, the last four in 50 3-5. They will race at Trentham, but have no engagements on the first day. Members of J. C. Tomkinson’s team were given short, easy tasks before going north later in the day. Shipmate (Stokes) ran three furlongs in 39. Hushaway (Wildermoth) followed in 38 4-5.
Standout (Stokes) ran the last half-mile of a very easy mile in 53 1-5, and Everglades (Wildermoth) finished some steady work with a half-mile in 53 3-5. Great Sensation pulled hard in the hands ot J. Didham while doing striding work on the trial grass. Then he trotted a round. The Wingatui veteran looks bright and muscular. Palisade and his stablemate Warfare did pace work on the sand.
