Scouts Back From South
Two Queen scouts, D. B. Crawford, of Auckland, and D. F. MacDonald, of Palmerston North, returned from McMurdo Sound yesterday morning aboard the United States naval supply tanker Chattahoochee after six weeks in the Antarctic. They were accompanied by F. J. Stanton, of Christchurch, a member of the Boys’ Brigade. The trio went south in H.M.N.ZJS. Endeavour.
Stationed at Scott Base, the boys were given every encouragement to see as much as possible. Crawford worked with the biologists, and the others worked with glaciologists and surveyors. MacDonald and Stanton made a field trip on the Ross Ice Shelf with a survey party, travelling by snocat. Crawford also flew by helicopter to Cape Evans, with a geologist, to study the effects of weather on rocks. The Chattahoochee anchored on arrival as the tanker berth was occupied. Her passengers came ashore by launch. She is now berthed and is expected to load another fuel cargo for McMurdo Sound, but will not sail until about January 20.
