A TITHE TO THE CHURCH
Rebuttal In Timothy
(N.Z P.A.-Reuter) BALTIMORE.
A man who quoted Scripture to uphold his contention that he should pay a tithe of his income to his church first and support his family second has paid up as the Baltimore County Circuit Court ordered, the Probation Department revealed here. Judge George Berry had given Robert Myers, of the 600 block Old North Point road here, 15 days to pay his wife and children, aged three and five, a 100 dollar (£33) lump sum and resume payments of 30 dollars (£10) a week to them —or face six months in prison. Myers said in evidence that he made 80 dollars (£26) a week and gave 8 dollars (£2 10s) to his church. He said he regarded that as his paramount obligation and felt that his minister would concur.
Judge Berry disclosed that in response to a published story about the case he had received a communication in rebuttal. It contained this statement from I Timothy, chapter five verse 8: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
