The 17-nation Ministerial committee of the Council of Europe today decided to foster co-operation between Western Europe and North America, leading to an “Atlantic partnership.” A communique issued after a two-da.y session in Paris said the Ministers noted that co-operation had already been initiated within existing organisations, and affirmed their determination to extend it Recalling the late President Kennedy’s call for an Atlantic partnership in the economic, political and military fields. Council of Europe officials said the non-aligned council members Sweden, Switzerland and Austria—welcomed transatlantic cooperation but held reservations about possible military commitments. The communique said the Ministers directed that committees of experts report on the feasibility of agreements on harmonisation “in social, cultural, legal and administrative matters” between the Common Market and the seven-nation European Free Trade Area which includes Britain and Scandinavia.
