(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 16. African rebels are making their first major drive against the authorities in Portuguese Angola with a liberation army of 7500 troops equipped with modern weapons, the “New York Times’* reported today.
A correspondent writing from “Northern Angola” said a column of rebels slipped over the border from the Congo almost every night, bound for secret staging camps in the north of Angola, bearing mines, mortars, bazookas, and new automatic rifles. The influx of men and weapons is a vital part of the rebels’ first major drive against the Portuguese since the revolt for independence erupted more than two yeans and a half ago, the dispatch said.
Air Officers Arrested (N.Z.P A .-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, Dec. 16. A number of Indonesian Air Force officers have been arrested on the order of the Chief of Staff, Vice-Marshal Umar Dhani. The arrests were part of a “correction campaign.” The men will be brought before a court soon, the marshal added.
