Decade Of Water Surveys After 1965

The world’s knowledge of hydrology would be pooled m the International Hydrological Decade, starting in 1965, Mr C, Toebes told the annual meeting of the New Zealand Hydrological Society in Christchurch. Mr Toebes, senior hydrologist of the Ministry of Works, Wellington, said the Government had advised U.N.ES.C.O. formally that New Zealand would take part in the programme. A national committee was being convened by a hydrologist, Mr A. P. Campbell, and it would have on it a member of the society. "The International Hydrological Decade will focus primarily on water in the land areas of the globe,” Mr Toebes said. "It will be concerned with oceanic waters

only in relation to specific problems in land areas. Likewise the programme will not be concerned with meteorology as such, but will involve study of precipitation as a major element of the hydrological cycle in land areas.” Mr Toebes said the decade of surveys would appraise present knowledge; attempt to form international standards; carry out research into specific problems at an international level; and examine education in hydrology, and the systematic exchange of information. Officers elected by the society were:—President, Mr Toebes; secretary, Mr I. Simmers; editor, Mr P. Grant; assistant editor, Mr G. Ridall; auditor, Mrs C. T. Clarke; committee, Messrs E. Y. Speight, W. B. Morrissey, B. Douglas, J. Finklestein, A. C. Hopkins, A. Raudkivi.
