A.&P.SHOW SUCCESSFUL

Entries Lowest Since 1948 The number of entries in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show last month was the smallest since 1948, said the secretary (Mr H. M. Studholme) at a meeting of the association yesterday. “But there were so many other features which were satisfactory that it was among the most successful we have had,” he added. “After the special efforts made by exhibitors for the centennial show last year, some falling-off in entries could have been expected. Against this background was a particularly unfavourable autumn, winter and spring for stock,” he said. “The result was that the sheep entry was down from 1297 to 1081 and the cattle entry from 743 to 508, but quality was very high—right up to our best standard in spite of the season. The considerable reduction from the record 1600 light horse entries to 1146 is not as easily explained,” said Mr Studholme. “The gate was very satisfactory—an indication that the public is willing to pay for good entertainment,” he said. The net figure for the three days after paying gate wages (£576) was £6486. Spoil from Moorhouse avenue had come in so fast that about 80 per cent of the embankment material was in place, said Mr Studholme. The only considerable portion of the embankment left to complete was that between the secretary’s office and the log cabin. The first stage of this would be completed next month, he said.
