Portrait Of Mr Newton For Papanui H.S.

A portrait of Mr L. B. Newton, former- headmaster of Papanui High School, was unveiled and presented to the school yesterday by Dr. C. D. Ellyett, chairman of the board of governors, at a special assembly. The portrait, painted by Mr W. Sutton, was given by the board of governors, parents, staff and pupils.

It was a happy occasion between friends for they were not only paying a tribute to a former headmaster but welcoming an old friend. Mr Newton was known to them all with the exception of Form 111, said Dr. Ellyett. The idea of having Mr Newton's portrait painted originated with Mr F. C. Harper, head of the commercial department and an old colleague of Mr Newton. He had activated members of the board of governors, the executive , of the ParentTeacher Association and the executive of the Old Students' Association. All were represented and all with the staff had contributed to having the portrait painted. It would be hung in the hall as would that of Mr J. B. Mcßride.

“We all join in the unveil-

ing of the portrait to record for all time your services to the school, Mr Newton. Also we join in wishing you and Mrs Newton many useful and happy years of 'further service to the community,” said Dr. Ellyett. In thanking the members of the board, the Parent-teacher Association, the staff (particularly his former colleagues), and old students, "by whose combined efforts the painting is here,” Mr Newton said he was proud they had considered him worthy of it. When he was sitting for his portrait he and Mr Sutton had discussed various subjects but one of the problems they discussed at some length was “the need for good discipline in our secondary schools." Mr Newton, who retired last year, said he had spent 25 years in the school, 15 years as first assistant and 10 as headmaster. During that period the school had been blessed with a fine teaching staff dedicated to their profession. "This portrait is a rich reward for any contribution I have made and I am proud you have considered me worthy of it,” said Mr Newton.
