Exports Of Honey Worth £230,000

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 11. A record total of 1587 tons of New Zealand top-grade honey was shipped to markets in 17 different countries last season, the manager of the Honey Marketing Authority (Mr C. T. Gosse) said today.

The increase in exports and improvement in overseas markets for New Zealand honey were well illustrated in the comparable figure for the 1961-62 season's exports —927 tons. This season's exports were worth about £230.000 in gross overseas returns. Mr Gosse said white clover honey, which had a premium on the world market, was unique, was enjoying a favourable market in Japan. One hundred and sixty nine tons of white clover honey was shipped there last season. Countries to which honey was shipped were: Britain (655 tons). Eire (82), Germany (269), Belgium (24), Norway (151), Sweden (196), Italy (1), Japan (169>, Malaya (15), Borneo (1), Korea (2), Kenya (1), Hong Kong (7), Canada (7), United States (1), Australia (5), and Fiji (1).

Mr Gosse said last season’s crop of white clover honey, mainly from the South Island, had been particularly good. Darker grades of honey from North Island apiaries were less last year than in the 1961-62 season. Honey collected from North Island sources last season totalled 860 tons, compared with 1113 tons during the 1961-62 season.

South Island sources yielded 640 tons last season, compared with 212 tons the season before.
