Whipped Wife; Gaoled

(N.Z. Press Association) KAITAIA, Dec. 11. There must be an adequate deterrent in cases where a man used a whip on his wife, said Mr J. R. Herd, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Kaitaia today. He sentenced Heta Barnes, aged 43, a farmer to a month’s imprisonment after he had pleaded guilty to assaulting a female. The police said Barnes’s wife was cut and bruised and had two welts on her shin. Barnes said he had cracked the whip to frighten her, but struck her only with his hand.
