COAL FOR WINTER

Earlier Buying To Be Urged

Canterbury coal merchants wiU make a big effort this summer to encourage consumers to lay in winter supplies as early as possible. This is an attempt to avoid a winter rush and the shortages that can result from transport and storage limitations when demand is high. The campaign to attract sales will begin early next year, but the merchants are already stock-piling coal that will not deteriorate with keeping. About 750 tons of domestic coal is coming from the West Coest each week at present, although sales are small. To store more coal at its two depots, the State Coal Depot in Christchurch is using a taller crane to raise its stacks from the usual Bft to 12ft, thus making possible the storage of perhaps 5000 tons of coal. The depots are about two-thirds filled now.
