EXPORT OF MEAT

Returns Above Last Year (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. Meat exports for the 10 months to October increased by more than £ 6 million over the same period last year. This brought total meat export receipts for the period to £84,936.000, according to the Meat Board. A graph prepared by the board shows that after reaching a low of 20d a lb on the Smithfield market in March, prices for first quality Downcross lamb rose to a peak of i 27d a lb in October. From there the usual seasonal easing, with New Zea-| land lamb facing competition! from a plentiful supply of home-killed lamb, forced the price down to 24d a lb halfway through last month. Shipments of 1962-63 season’s meat to markets outside the United Kingdom to November 2 came to nearly 180,000 tons—37 per cent of total meat exports. Killings so far this season are slightly up on last year. To November 16, killings for the 1963-64 season totalled 33,700 tons, compared with 33,400 tons in 1962-63.
