JOHNSON IN N.Y.
Stringent Security
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK. December 9.
President Johnson made a flying visit to New York today under a security curtain so heavy that six duck hunters near Idlewild Airport were arrested.
About 5000 police and security guards formed the strongest security screen ever seen around an American President during the twohour visit.
Men were stationed on rooftops along the route which the President travelled in his special closed limousine. Barricades kept spectators away from him, Secret Service agents screened him and helicopters hovered overhead. Police and Secret Service agents checked every window, overpass and other possible hiding place along the unannounced route. Police on the route were ordered to “face the spectators at all times.” Special attention was given to anyone carrying a parcel or suitcase. The White House doctor, Rear Admiral George Burkley, rode in a police car which preceded President Johnson’s limousine. Before the President arrived, police arrested six men carrying shotguns near the airport. They were charged with trespassing and held for questioning. Mr Johnson attended the funeral of a former Governor of New York, Mr Herbert Lehman and called on the former president, Mr Herbert Hoover.
Lift Failure (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) OSLO, Dec. 9. A towing staircase crowded with spectators cillapsed yesterday while Norway's Olympic ski jumpers were making qualifying jumps. Forty injured were treated at hospital and six were admitted.
