MINOR PARKING OFFENCES

S.I.M.U.’s Proposal For Fines

The executive of the South Island Motor Union yesterday decided to refer to the joint standing committee for further discussion a suggestion that local authorities should be able to collect fines on the spot for minor parking offences. The decision arose from a report that the North Island Motor Union was opposed to the South Island proposal. The meeting felt that the North Island union had misunderstood the proposal. The proposal was made at the annual meeting of the 5.1.M.U., which passed a resolution asking that the executive make representations to the Government that local authorities should be permitted to collect directly from offenders the monetary penalties for minor parking offences imposed by the courts, but subject always to the defendant’s right to elect a hearing before a magistrate. It was felt that this would simplify procedures, avoid publicity, and reduce court costs to the offender.

Sawbench on Fire.—A sawbench owned by a contracting firm was severely damaged by fire at the School tor Deaf, Wakefield avenue, Sumner, at 4.3 am. yesterday. Firemen from Sumner and Woolston put out the fire before it damaged other property.
