TOWN HALL PLAN
Seating For 2750 Christchurch's town hall (should accommodate about [2750 persons, with provision for a choir of 250 on tiers at the back of the stage, which should be capable of extension over a flat floor in the front, said the town hall committee in a preliminary report to the City Council last evening. In addition to the town hall, it was envisaged that there would be a concert chamber and a theatre suitable for recitals, plays and lectures. Auxiliary buildings would include a restaurant, banquet hall, meeting-rooms and car-parking facilities. A more detailed report should be ready for the next meeting, the committee said. It was hoped then to submit an estimate of the cost and to have a draft of the conditions for an architectural competition. The council agreed with the committee that the Ricca rton Borough and Waimairi, Paparua and Heathcote County Councils should each appoint a representative to the committee. The Heathcote County Council, while sympathetic to the town hall project, said it was unable to contribute financially on the basis suggested by the City Council. It might reconsider the matter if there was a changed method of contribution.
