RESERVE AT AKAROA

Dan Rogers Creek Area (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. A 17-acre area at Dan Rogers creek, overlooking Akaroa heads, unique as the southernmost place in this hemisphere where palms grow, has been declared a reserve for the preservation of flora and fauna. The area has been purchased from Mr J. B. Helps, of Akaroa. It will be of great interest to botanists in New Zealand, as more than 100 different species of plants have been identified in the reserve. Since it is inaccessible to animals, the area has been preserved largely in its natural state. “The action of Mr Helps In making it available for preservation is greatly appreciated by the Government,” said the Minister of Lands (Mr. Gerard). “Mr Helps’s association with the reserve will continue, as he has agreed tc accept an appointment as an honorary ranger.” Although the area will be available for public inspection. permits will have to be obtained from the commissioner of Crown lands, Christchurch.
