ANTARCTICA DISCOVERER
Bellingshausen Proof Claimed (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW, November 16. Soviet historians claim to have found who discovered Antarctica. A map drawn by the Russian explorer. Fabian Bellingshausen on his 181921 expedition resolved the question. Tass said today. Tass said the map had been lying in an archive for years without being identified, but although it was unsigned, it carried entries in Bellinghausen’s handwriting. Tass said the map kept daily records of scientific observations made during the expedition. Soviet specialists, having studied the classification of ice as understood by the explorers, had decided they were fully aware of the fact that they had approached an ice-class continent.
According to reference books, an American sealer. Nathaniel Palmer, probably first sighted the Antarctic mainland in 1820. Another American. Charles Wilkes, sailed 1500 miles along the coast, and finally proved Antarctica was a continent, in 1839-40.
