ANTARCTIC PICKET
Hissem Visits Lyttelton
A visit was paid to Lyttelton on Wednesday by the Antarctic weather picket ship, U.S.S. Hissem. The Hissem, which last called at Lyttelton on September 17 in the course of her voyage from Newport <Rhode Island) to Antarctica, is normally based at Dunedin. After loading stores unloaded by an American merchant vessel which called earlier this year, the Hissem sailed for Dunedin where she will spend five days before returning to her weather station. She is being relieved by H.M.N.Z.S. Rotoiti at present. Two passengers picked up at Campbell Island were aboard the Hissem. One is Dr. J. R. Barcus, of the meteorological division of the University of California who had been on Campbell Island for about a fortnight, and the other a New Zealander. Mr N. D. White, of the meteorological staff on the island.
