CALIFORNIA FAIR
Huge Port In The Making LONG BEACH, (California). Work has begun on a 20-miUion-dollar pier at the world's fair. It is expected to be completed by mid-1964. Most of the 500-acre fair site is under water. It is now being filled in with three million tons of rock and 33 million cubic yards of spoil. It will be the largest manmade port facility in the world. The pier will stretch a mile south into the Pacific and then another mile west into the southern gateway of the Los Angeles Basin. The investment for the fair is estimated at 400 million dollars, three times the amount spent at the 1962 Seattle world fair. “We expect 40,000,000 visitors during the two 184-day fair season," said one official. When the fair closes, a portion of the site will become a permanent cultural and recreational centre.—Reuter.
