WEST COAST HOTELS

No Inspection By Mr Osmond The New Zealand Fire Service Council has supported the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board in its decision to refuse the West Coast Licensing Committee’s request that the board’s Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) should inspect West Coast hotels annually and report on the buildings in relation to fire hazards and aspects of fire safety and prevention. The Fire Service Council, in a letter to the board, said it would again take the matter up with the Justice Department. The Sale of Liquor Act, 1962, provides for the annual inspection of hotels by competent persons who shall report to the licensing committees. The Christchurch board at its meeting last month decided that Mr Osmond had enough work to do in the board's district and that inspections and reports on hotels outside the district would be prejudicial to his proper carrying out of the duties he already had within the district. It could mean that Mr Osmond would be away from the board’s district for a considerable period each year.
