Table Tennis Brightwell Back With Three Wins
V. N. Brightwell (Selwyii I), the former New Zealand representative, gave a brilliant display to win all his matches in the fifth round of the senior table tenis competition.
This was the first match far Brightwell in the present series and his fine play, plus good support from A. Vermes and the South Canterbury women’s champion, Mrs T. May, enabled the champion Selwyn I side to beat Wallabies 11, 12-0. University gained its second success when it beat a weakened Avonside team, 7-5. J. O. Moen (University), making a comeback to the game affter a short absence, surprised by beating the promising players, M. Flewellen and J. Pierce. D. D. M. Stewart was again University’s top scorer with three singles wins. Wallabies I went down to the unbeaten Eagles side, 3-9, in whicli a surprise feature was the way in which J. Armstrong (Eagles) won his matches with strong forcing strokes. Armstrong in the past relied mainly on defence but now using a sponge bat he is gradually gaining some measure of control.
