U.S. Denies Collaboration

The United States yesterday strongly denied charges of American collaboration with South Africa on underground nuclear tests. The charge had been made in the United Nations by Tanganyika. The chief American delegate, Mr Adlai Stevenson, said the reference may have been to a joint research project undertaken in a South African mine.
The project is studying fundamental nuclear particles at great depths where they can be more easily detected. The project had “no relation whatsoever to the testing of nuclear weapons and will be accompanied by no explosions,” . Mr Stevenson said.
