PROFESSOR H. R. GRAY
Plans During Leave Completion of a book on equity, which will be a comparative study of its development in the British Commonwealth and the United States, is part of the work planned for his refresher leave by Professor H. R. Gray, head of the faculty of law at the University of Canterbury. Professor Gray will leave for England on November 21. Half of his year overseas will be spent as visiting professor in the faculty of law at King’s College, London. He will also spend some time at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in the Uni-
versity of London. The first director of the institute was Sir David Hughes-Parry, who was chairman of the committee which several years ago made an inquiry into university education in New Zealand. In Professor Gray’s absence, the faculty of law at Canterbury will be administered by Professor F. R. Crane, who is professor of English law at King’s College and vice-dean of the faculty of laws. Professor Crane has taught at Manchester and Nottingham universities, as well as at Tulane University, New Orleans. At Nottingham, he was Professor Gray’s head of department. While in New Zealand, Professor Crane will study the New Zealand law of property and system of conveyancing, and will visit Australia for a similar study. At its last meeting the council of the University of Canterbury agreed to appoint Professor Crane actingdean of the faculty and head of department during his visit to Christchurch. The opportunity for members of the faculty to work with an overseas authority would be extremely valuable, and he would look forward to discussing the department's development with Professor Crane at the end of the year, Profesor Gray said.
