SHEEP FOR INDIA

More than 500 From N.Z.

More than 500 sheep are likely to leave New Zealand for India at the end of the month. They are going to India under a major programme launched by the Indian Government, with the backing of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, to raise the standard of the country’s sheep. The consignment will comprise 320 Romney ewes, 40 Romney rams. 150 Southdown ewes and 10 Southdown rams. The Rev, H. C. Dixon, national secretary of the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, said yesterday that the sheep would be standard flock sheep. The sheep are being chosen by Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd. Mr Dixon said that sheep would also go to India under the same programme from Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada. The New Zealand sheep, which may be shipped from Wellington, will be accompanied by an experienced shepherd, who will also see that they are settled in In India.
