PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS
Swarm Threat To Crops (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) CAPE TOWN. Nov. 13. South Africa prepared today to meet the country's worst red locust plague in 30 years. Hopper swarms up to eight miles long are threatening 20,000 to 30,000 square miles of north-west Cape Province. Once the pests fly huge crop-growing areas in Transvaal and the Orange Free State will be menaced. The Secretary of Agricultural Technical Services, Dr. P. W. Vorster, said the Whole area of north-western Cape Province was “infested” by hoppers. Even though 40 tons of poisonous dust was being used daily to kill them, the swarms are continuing to gather, carpeting farms, growing crops, and the veldt Heavy rains have lad to increased hatchings.
