KILT DRESS UNIFORMS
Prefects At St. Andrew’s The highest award St. Andrew’s College could make to its pupils was appointment as prefects, said Mrs E. Mars when she presented prefects’ kilt dress uniforms to the school yesterday on behalf of the Parent-Teacher Association. “Wear the kilt with pride —you have the right to be proud. Wear it with humility —it becomes those in authority to execute it with humility. Wear it with purpose—your purpose being to serve the college that has served you so well. Wear it with honour—to honour the proud tradition of those privileged to wear it before you,” said Mrs Mars. Mirs Mars had led a women’s committee which raised sufficient funds to present the kilt for all 12 school prefects and also provide a cheque to assist in the purchase of additional pipe band uniforms and equipment, said Mr E. W. S. Hignett, president of the P.T.A. The Ferguson tartan was adopted by the college when its pipe band was formed through the efforts of Mr Alexander Ferguson, a former board member, in appreciation of his efforts and because Sir Charles Fergusson was then GovernorGeneral of New Zealand, said Mr Hignett. A daughter of Mr Ferguson was present Six years ago the kilt became the dress uniform of the prefects, but it was borrowed from the band. Now the prefects would have their own. The gifts were received for the college by Mr F. N. Lawrence, chairman of the board.
