General Election
Sir,—“National believes that the function of taxation is to pay for necessary works and services of the State and rejects the Labour-Socialist belief that the State knows best how to spend the people's money.” (“Guide to Form.’’) “We unfortunately have to take quite a slice of your income and spend it for you. It is important that it be administered wisely.” (“Daily Advertiser” extract from a speech by Mr Holyoakei. Can you beat that? Inconsistency, thy name is National. Who, beside themselves, says they have administered it wisely? At this stage of the race my money is still on the old grey mare —and I’m not laying off any beta— Yours, etc., A. F. PALMER. Waimate, November 12, 1963.
Sir,—l heartily endorse all sand by C. F. Saunders. The more the electors are coddled, toadied to, pampered, manicured, sham pooed and bed - cup-fed. the less they are capable of distinguishing between a parish, a postal district, and an electorate. Now, that gnarted old veteran, H. G. R. Mason, and myself are the last two survivors of ail the candidates at the 1922 General Ejection. In fact, I can quite clearly remember “Gecrdie” Laurenson, Tommy Taylor, G. W. Russell, George Witty, and L M, Isitt in their full vigour. And what riproairious meetings they used to have. What price the Hon, F. M. B. Fisher’s meeting in Woodston; and the riots at W. F. Massey’s attempts to address Christchurch meetings. Dear me, how bored and flat-footed are these moderns. —Yours, etc, R. M. THOMSON. November 13, 1963.
