Tuesday: Centre bowl testing; mid-week friendly matches; electric light tournament at Redcliffs. Wednesday: AU day tournament at Uncoln; electric light tournaments at Kaiapoi W.M.C. and South Brighton. * ¥ * After two weeks of cancellations, Redcliff's night fixtures have at last got under way with a mein’s open fours competition held on Tuesday evening. Rinks skipped by N. Scott (Lyttelton) and J. Bamford (Sumner) each had three wins; Bamford won the play-off. ¥ ¥ ¥ lan Andrews, of United, a popular bowler in many Canterbury tournaments, has temporarily transferred to Timaru. He was in Christchurch for the R.S.A. Labour Day fours tournament, and was first equal with four wins.
The Cashmere club has now completed two games in the champion rinks with three yet to be played. The winnering skips are J. Mills 2 wins, G. Crossen 2, H. B Kay 2, R. Wilkins 2, W. Anderson 1, J. Campbell 1, R. Lattimore 1, A. Purves 1, A. Roberts 1. ¥ ¥ ¥ A correspondent writes the
following article on triples bowls:—
A widely-played game in Australia, the popularity of Triples would appear to be increasing in New Zealand. In my own club (Sumner) it has been played nearly every afternoon by the mid-week players for some years; this probably started as a necessity but is now played from choice. One of the advantages is to those requiring to get in as much bowling practice as possible early in the season. It is a three-bowl, rink game with no seconds and 63 bowls are played as against <2 in rinks while the time occupied is slightly less. But it may be a long time before Triples eould be adopted on a centre competitive basis on account of the green space and corresponding financial loss, and because of the loss of play for 16 players on an eight-rink green. Because of that, it would not find much favour with large clubs and a capacity membership. But it is an interesting game and is recommended to smallers clubs with plenty of green and fewer members. It does away with seconds, which have always seemed to me to be rather redundant—like the No. 8 forward in Rugby.—F. L. Alexander.
A rather unusual team, skipped by Fred Cowles, is entering the United club’s championship fours. Cowles is a left-hander, as is the rest of the team: D. Buckley (lead), D. Wormington (2), and S. Long (3). It might prove to be an interesting combination. ¥ ¥ ¥ One championship match has been held by Redcliffs this season. In the championship singles, Bryce Lane* last year’s winner of the colts’ singles, had a good win over an experienced player, A. McDougall. Lane’s form flowed that last year’s experience has put him in good shape and he should be a player to be contended with this year.
The first one-day tournament of the Christchurch club was held yesterday. Although the green was heavy, it was playing true, with a fair draw. Two teams tiad four wins and in the play-off, A. Wotton (skip), G. Gibb (3), G. McDougall (2) and K. Little (lead) won on a caliper measure from E. Colville (skip), C. McNaitty (3), J. Greenslade (2), and H. Teague (lead).
