Busy Time For
Trade
(From our Grocery Crzpkt.] Carnival week in Christchurch is a busy time for grocers. Before Christmas trading is likely to receive a fillip from the long weekend, and the number of visitora in the city should also give a boost to the trade.
Lone Grain Mce^—American rice growers are quoting prices for their long grain rice. Thi* type of rice has recently become more popular in New Zealand and. helping the position. is the erratic shipping of Siam rice from the East. An American shipment of long frain rice is expected to leave rora the east coast early In the New Year for the New Zealand market. Rice lx becoming more popular in NewZealand. and this can be attributed to the general trend to continental and Chinese cooking. Powdered Cheese.—For manyyears a powdered cheese has been produced in Italy. The main type is Parmassan. which has a hard texture. According to a recent bulletin. Australia is now processing for the first time in this way cheese with a high fat content. Going one stage further, they are producing a spray dried powder with the same fat content as butter—known as powdered butter. This has the advantage that it is free Sowing. "It can be mixed easily with other ingredients in cakes and biscuits and in dry powdered cake mixes and ice cream. Its use thus eliminates the time consuming and troublesome operations of creaming and blending in cooking and baking.” the bulletin says. So far there is no indication of these products coming on the New Zealand market.
Mint Jelly.—Now that we are well into the mint season, mint products are again becoming available. Several weeks ago there was a shortage of some brands of sauces but now this position has been relieved. A new mint product is available under the brand of “Old Mill.” This is a mint jelly In an Boz container and is expected to retail at 3s. Mint jelly has been available mainly from overseas, and this supply has been curtailed by import licences.
