38 Fours Qualify In Rose Bowl

The Rangiora team, skipped by Mrs A. Petrie, the title-winner last year, was one of 38 fours which qualified in the Christchurch women’s Rose Bowl competition after the opening day’s play yesterday.

Mrs Petrie went through the section play undefeated, an achievement she shared with 10 other skips. The tournament is being played under different conditions to those of past seasons. Until this year it has been completed in one day, the final invariably being played with the assistance of lighted matches. Finals were usually over five heads after three heads had decided the postsection play. This year two days are being used, with four games af section play, all fours with three or four wins taking part in post-section play, on the Shirley green today. Games yesterday were limited to 16 ends, but only 12 ends will be played in post-section games and the final. Two Notable Failures Probably the greatest surprise of. the day was the failure of two prominent Woolston skips to qualify, Mesdames McKenzie and Nankivell. Mrs Nankivell was runner-up in the fours in the

last national tournament held in Christchurch. Mrs McKenzie has also figured prominently in centre and national fixtures. Skips of the qualifying fours are:— Four Wins.—Mesdames Palmer (Shirley), McHugh (Rangiora), Drummond (Oxford). Brady (Fendalton), Marshall (Redcliffs), Leech (Rangiora), Watson (United). Giles (Belfast). Petrie (Rangiora), Hanger (Spreydon). Vaughan (Opawa). Three Wins.—Mesdames Inwood (Kaiapoi), Oakley (Woolston), Leeth (St. Albans), Smith (Burwood). Roberts (Richmond). Smith (Katapoi), Mair (United), Gibbs (Lincoln), Forbes (Burwood). Barrett (Shirley), Grimwood (Hawarden), Archer (Beckenham), Wilson (Richmond), Voice (Kirwee), Rogers (St. Albans) Cooke (Avon), McDonald (Beckenham), Green (Linwood). Dale (Burwood), Coombes (Shirley), Blakeway (Fendalton), Prisk (Richmond). Blakemore (Lincoln). Manship (Shirley), Ash (Fendalton), Edge (Burwood), McCree (DalUngton).
