Rider Suspended

The Washdyke rider, B. T. Jones, was suspended for three days at an inquiry after the Port Cooper High-weight at Riccarton yesterday. Jones, who rode Rhythm Rein, was charged with crossing in front of Lord Nikita near the two furlongs without one clear length and his own length. Evidence was heard from the stipendiary stewards (Messrs D. Spicer and P. J. Reid), and the riders H. J. Bowness. B. J. Langford. R. O. Cairns, and J. D. Pankhurst. Jones was found guilty of causing interference through careless riding, and was suspended to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Picright (N. Eastwood) refused to jump out when the starter opened the gates in the Fendalton Handicap. When questioned, Eastwood said the horse simply refused to move and consequently lost considerable ground. The Jockey Club Handicap favourite, Wilful, which began from fairly wide out, was unable to get a clear run when racing behind Tyrol in the early and middle stages of the race. She received no interference. Halfway down the straight Wilful was held up for a stride or two when Royal Leigh (J. F. Grylls), whirfi was finishing fast on the outside, appeared to change his stride. Questioning of Grylls and Wilful’s

rider. B. F. Andrews, confirmed the official observation that no culpable interference had occurred. No further action was necessary.

Explain (J. F. Carvalho) refused to leave the stalls at the start. The field had travelled some distance before Carvalho could get Explain to jump away. The trainer, A. E. Didham. said he had had some difficulty getting Explain to leave the stalls and to work on lefthanded tracks. As Explain had just returned from Australia, where she had been racing on right-handed tracks, Didham’s explanation was accepted. He was warned that Explain's barrier manners would have to be improved. Bagful (F. H. Pope) was sent to the outside at the start of the Port Cooper High-weight after having twice broken through the stalls. When the field was sent away Bagful swung sideways and lost considerable ground. The Kurd (J. Carvalho) ran very greenly over the first three furlongs of the Irwell Handicap and caused checks to Narbada, Shipmate, and Royal Burgh. J. R, O'Neill, rider of Narbada, confirmed that Narbada recovered quickly but failed to run on. From the official observation, and after questioning the assistant stipendiary steward

stationed at the top of the straight, it was considered that no action was necessary Inside the final furlong of the Apprentices' Handicap Satinette (D. L. Goss) had to be sharply checked when there was insufficient room to improve between Apache (O. Anning) and Modern Imp (M. F. Dowling). No action was warranted against any rider. Satinette lost about three lengths at the start when her rider temporarily lost the use of an iron. Tuborg (P. J. Daly), Chief Order (C. L. Reeves), and Royal Appeal (M. McCann) all lost ground during the first two furtongs of the race. After questioning the riders concerned, and from the observations of the stipendiary stewards, it was found that no rider was to blame. The horses had to be checked because of general tightening of the field. Dilane (M. F. Dowling) refused to jump when the starter released the gates in the Ashley Handicap and lost considerable ground. Alaska, as had been usual for him in recent starts, wtas slow to move from the stalls, and lost about two lengths. After representations had been made by Mr C. C. Wells, the owner of Allegretto, about further barrier training, the committee decided to take the gelding’s acceptance for Saturday, provided he satisfied the stipendiary steward about his improved behaviour. If no improvement was reported, the horse would be withdrawn by the committee.
