S. AFRICANS’ DEFEAT
Xi’s “Lack Of Experience”
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Nov. 13.
“Lack of experience” was the cause of South Africa's defeat by South Australia yesterday, the Melbourne “Age” cricket writer, Percy Beames, reported today. South Africa need not be too depressed about its first defeat on the tour, he wrote. “It can write off the eigl.itwicket loss as being due mainly to the inexperience of its young players on Australian pitches.” Beames said that if the South Africans had learnt anything it was that basmen do not help themselves by over-exaggerating the difficulties presented by bowlers just because the ball turned and came through at varying heights. The “Sydney Morning Herald” writer, Tom Goodman, said that poor fielding —particularly dropped catches—“contributed in large measure to the Springboks' defeat." The New South Wales cricket selectors last night named the team to play South Africa on November 22-26 at Sydney. Including six test players, it is: R. Benaud (captain), R. Simpson, B. Booth, G. Corling, D. Ford, T. Lee, J. Martin, F. Misson, N. O’Neill, P. Philpott, G. Thomas.
