Junior Teams To Play Shield Tennis Matches
Canterbury junior tennis teams to play in the Slazenger and Howe Shield interprovincial competitions this season were announced by the selectors (Messrs R. B Brown, G. Pickering and B. A. Rodgers) yesterday as follows: Boys.—A. Brooks, W. Edgecumbe, R. McCutcheon, J. Martin, J. Mitchell. Girls.—A. Andrew, J. Bell, D Hopping, S. Mac Neil!, R. Walls (Ashburton). The teams have been
•chosen after an exhaustive series of ranking matches at Wilding Park at week-ends. Their first assignment will be matches in their zone with Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast. Both teams will meet Nelson in the first round, the boys at Greymouth, the girls at Nelson on dates yet to be decided. Travel To Auckland The teams will travel to Auckland on January 16 and will play in a quadrangular tournament there for the next two days with Auckland, North Shore and Northland.
If they have won their zone matches they will contest the semi-finals of the shield competitions on January 20 at Hamilton with the finals the next day. They
will then play in the national junior championships there from January 22-28. Three under -17 players will also be part-sponsored by the Canterbury junior association to the championships at HamLHoo. They are an Ashburton boy. I. Behrnes, and two girte, P. McLean and J. Coombs. Mr Pickering will be manager of the boys’ team for Nelson, Mr Brown, manager of the girls team to Nelson. Mr S. T. Day will manage the teams in the North Island with Mr Pickering as assistant
