Bador Set Pattern With Long-Odds Win

Bador won the Port Cooper High-weight Handicap at odds of better than 50 to one at Riccarton yesterday and set a pattern for the day. There were two more winners at halfcentury odds and Castle Flight was the only successful favourite on the programme.

Bador, a well-beaten tenth in the corresponding race on Saturday, narrowly won the high-weight in an all-Otago finish and paid £52 Is 6d and £lO 10s.

Mr H. G. McLeod’s Gabador gelding charged through from the ruck close to home and won by half a neck from The Slug. Then there was a head to Great Howe, and another head to the Riccarton-trained Scribbler, which looked the winner when he took a short lead just inside the furlong.

Bador was close to the lead in the rush for positions, but drifted a few places in a close-running field going to the seven furlongs. Crackle was the pacemaker, and the hot favourite, Smoke Ring, was taken forward to the pace-maker's girth. Smoke Ring was left clear when Crackle petered out on the home turn, but he was in difficulties outside the furlong, where Scribbler was working forward from the tail of the field, and Great Howe, The Slug, and Bador were manoeuvring for late challenges. Bador had the fastest finish and he won well, if narrowly. Sixth was the best Smoke Ring could manage. First-Start Win Shipmate made an impressive winning debut for Mr A. N. Smith in the. Irwell Handicap. He led from outside the furlong and won by a length and a half from Boulevard, another having his first race start, but the second favourite. Shipmate is a neat brown gelding by Messmate from Hush Money. His dam was the top sprinter of her time, and Shipmate shapes as if he will be the best of her produce to race so far. A. J. Stokes had to switch Shipmate fairly quickly early in the race to avoid being carried wide by one of his rivals. But he then went straight through with his run to reach the front, and he was in no serious trouble, though some of his rivals managed to draw a little closer at the end. Boulevard, a solid finisher, beat Nomadic by half a length for second. Then there was a length and a half to Honey Blonde, which just caught The Kurd, which had a hand in most of the early pace-making. Stylish Win Castle Flight, giving weight to all but one of his rivals, recorded a stylish win in the Apprentices’ Handicap, for which he was fa- ourite. It was last Saturday’s Spring Plate all over again.

Carpenter, which chased Castle Flight home on the first day of the meeting, again filled the role of run-ner-up, though he was in danger of losing that position yesterday when he drifted wide out on the track from the home turn. . Castle Flight gave the Takanini apprentice, W. Worrall, his first winning ride, and the easiest of rides at that. The Gore-trained Knight’s Romance colt had the pace to be in the front line from the start, and he had the others well beaten for speed outside the furlong, where he was under a good hold. Carpenter was switched from the inside near the halfmile to go through with his run, but lost much ground by drifting wide out on the track. The bracketed pair. Mossbum and Carnbeg, ran him close at the end. Allez Vite led the others in, a length back. Satinette lost two or three lengths at the start and showed good speed to finish eighth. At Long Odds A brilliant late run from the back enabled Everglades to get up in the last few strides to win the Stonyhurst Handicap at Jong odds for his Dunedin owner, Mr A. N. Smith.. The three-year-old Clarification gelding was the 9/10 favourite of 12 and paid £55 19s 6d to win and £9 19s 6d for a place. Everglades. which is trained at Riccarton by J. CTomkinson, was ridden by A. J. Stokes. This combination was represented successfully earlier in the day by Shipmate, which also carries Mr Smith’s colours. Everglades was last alongside Broker half a mile out. But Stokes brought him forward in the middle of the track going to the furlong and he ran the nine furlongs out soundly to beat the favourite, Last Count, by a neck. Last Count was alongside Dulu one place from the rear at the half-mile, made ground quickly to chase Depending into the last furlong, and just failed to cope with Everglades’ challenge. Depending, which had led the chase after Omasong to the straight and which was in front at the furlong, was a length back third. She beat Great Principle, which had his chance, by a neck. Fourth Win

Friar’s Birthday brought his record to four wins in succession and convinced everyone that he will be a first-class prospect tor the Otaio Plate on the third day

of the meeting when he outclassed 18 rivals in the Ashley Handicap.

R. J. Skelton had Mr E. H. Young's Cassock gelding in touch with the pace all the way. He followed Woodcock, Marlborough and Gold Shower into the straight, came to the front at the fiirlong and drew away to win by three lengths. In a tight finish for second. Champ beet the popular fancy, Alaska, by half a head. Champ made his run from mid-field to chase Friar’s Birthday from the furlong, but Alaska had only Dilane behind him five furlongs out. Bodkin, the longest shot in the field, was a length back fourth. He was one of the early tail-enders, but made ground steadily and was alongside Alaska as they made the straight. Keep, another well out of his ground early, but handy enough on the home turn, ran well for sixth a neck back. He beat Golden Days, another solid finisher, by a length and Ham, which shaded a group comprised of Woodcock, Repair and Lady York, led in the others.
