LANDLORDS WARNED
‘Rack-Renting’ Of Maoris (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 13. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) tonight warned ruthless landlords, particularly in Auckland, that a National Government might act against exploitation of tenants. “The Tenancy Act never covered ‘rack-renting’ of Islanders and Maoris in some of the slummy suburbs of Auckland—but it encouraged it by discouraging further building. “The only cure for some foams of ‘rack-renting* is to make more property available and that is what we have tried to stimulate. But I cannot say before the poll that we may not impose some fresh controls. I am not prepared to give ‘rackrenters’ an absolute guarantee.
“I have been reluctant to move, because we could start the business all over again. It would be legislating against a few in Auckland, Wellington and other towns. If we could single them out, I would not hesitate to deal with them. It would be a tragedy if we had to bring it back for the sake of a few irresponsible citizens.”
