PRICE OF SUGAR
Search For Stability (N.Z. Press Asm. —Copyright) OTTAWA. Nov. 13. Canada will consider Commonwealth offers of long-term, fixed - price supplies of raw sugar to curb prices. The Trade Minister, Mr Michael Sharp, told the Commons tonight he had received cabled offers earlier in the day from the Commonwealth Sugar Exporters’ Group and from Rhidesian sugar suppliers. "There are no large stocks of sugar in the world," Mr Sharp said. He added that there is "no shortage of any kind in sight” in Canada. Stocks of raw and refined sugar are 10 per cent or more higher than a year ago. The difficulty for Canada is not supply, but price. Britain and the United States have managed markets for sugar which in past years has meant higher prices for consumers than Canadians paid. Past Canadian policy, geared to an open market, has meant lower prices. Now, however, Cana, a’s traditional Commonwealth suppliers are suppying the United States, seeking to establish their positions there now that the United States Government has cancelled the sugar-purchasing quota formerly allocated to Cuba.
