FARM CADET TRAINING
Plans For NX Scheme (N.Z. Prar- Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 13. The Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs has adopted plans for a national farm cadet scheme which it hopes to see put into action soon Cadet schemes are operating in a number of districts and the federation believes the time is ripe for a national policy. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Talboys) has expressed interest in the proposals and the support of Federated Farmers is being sought. Key points in the scheme announced by the federation today are:— Over-all control by a farm training council representative of all interests. Small regional committees to work at local levels. Youths to train on selected farms for three years and to be encouraged to study technical correspondence school courses in agriculture. The scheme to be open to selected youths interested in farm work as a career, who have at least two years post - primary schooling. Bursaries for outstanding cadets to assist towards a diploma in agriculture at an agricultural college at the end of the training period. The chief differences between the federation’s proposals and a number of present local schemes are the shorter training period (three years instead of five), and the provision for bursaries.
