BUILDING IN HALSWELL

Fewer Permits Issued Building to (he county would not increase until sewerage was available, the chairman of the Halswell County Council (Mr J. Y. Pethig) said at the annual meeting of the council. Mr Pethig said the value of building permits issued last year was £122,571, compared with £284,392 in the previous year. There were 176 permits issued, compared with 209 the year before, and 25 of them were for dwellings, compared with 64 in the previous year. A motion by Cr. J. G. Stephens that the chairman’s honorarium be increased by £5O to £2OO a year was lost by three votes to two. Cr. P. Wynn-Williams said he appreciated that the honorarium was inadequate, but he thought it unwise, if the financial position was considered, to vote something extra to one of the council. Mr Pethig was unanimously re-elected chairman, with Cr. Wynn-Williams as deputychairman. Members elected as representatives on otter bodies were the same as those for the previous year. .
