AUSTRALIAN EXPANSION

Attraction To Young Men “Australia is thirsty for professional manpower and New Zealand will have to adjust herself to the situation,” said Dr. Graham Riley, yesterday. He recently returned from representing New Zealand on the board of censors (examiners) of the z&ftyal Australasian College Wr Physicians at its meeting in Brisbane. After the meeting he visited schools and universities in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. “Australia has obvious wealth, and new buildings ere everywhere. It is planning for the future on a big scale. It is looking to New Zealand and other countries for their bright young men, and is willing and able to provide the facilities for them. “One wonders how we shall be able to keep the best of our graduates in face of this situation,” Dr. Raley said. The board of censors examined 95 candidates for its membership, of whom 35 were successful. Several of thi candidates were from South-east Asia. Although only one was able to get to Brisbane to take the clinical part of his examination course, others passed the written papers and would ccme to Australia later for the clinical section. The Australian physicians were doing much to forward medi cal education in South-east Asia, and a party of their most eminent men was recently in the area assisting with courses and arranging for Asians to sit the written section of the examination in Singapore. (Dr. E G. Sayers, dean of the Otago Medical School, was with this group). The censor-in-chief of the Australasian board, Six William Morrow, would art with the New Zealand board at the annual meeting of the Royal College in Christchurch in February, said Dr. Riley.
