South Africans’ First Defeat, By 8 Wickets

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ADELAIDE, November 12. The touring South African cricketers suffered their first Joss in Australia today when they were heavily beaten, by eight wickets, by South Australia at Adelaide. After South Africa had been dismissed for 279 in its second innings South Australia required only 82 runs for victory.

The runs were scored for the loss of two wickets after the South Africans had captured the first wicket for one run. and the second with the •core 18. The South Australian skipper, L. Favell, dug in after the two wickets fell cheaply, and was 59 not out at the finish. The South Africans fought gamely this morning when they resumed in an almost hopeless position, with aix wickets down for 184 in the second innings and still requiring 35 runs to pass South Australia's mammoth total of 573. P. R. Carlstein played a

magnificent part to score 123 and with a courageous dr,spiay by P. van der Merwe, they put on 120 in 106 minutes for the seventh wicket. But Carlstein was caught at the wicket and van der Merwe followed soon after, scoring 44. There was noone to stay with J. H. B. Waite and the innings ended in the first over after lunch. South Australia had moments of anxiety until Favell began to punish severely South Africa's offspinner. M. A. Seymour, hitting him for a four, a six and a four in four balls. The South Africans next meet an Australian Combined XI at Melbourne on Friday.
