MAN LAY ON WING
Amphibian Taxi-ing (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 11. Mr B. W. J. Rodgers, a passenger bound for Waiheke, made a spectacular return to Auckland today lying on the wing of a Grumman Widgeon amphibian aircraft as it taxied back to its base. With five passengers on board the Tourist Air Travel amphibian, Captain M. F. Brister was taking off when the starboard float was struck by a heavy wave. The nose of the float was badly buckled and it was pushed back against an aileron.
Captain Brister, who noticed the damage just as the plane became airborne, immediately touched down again.
Mr Rodgers then climbed out and on to the port wing. He lay down grasping the leading edge, stretched out beside the engine. This was to raise the other wing and prevent the damaged float from dipping into the sea as the aircraft taxied to the landing. ramp. Later the passengers were put aboard another aircraft and flown to Waiheke.
