CAR DRIVER KILLED
Collision With Train A man aged 32 was killed in Christchurch at 5 p.m. yesterday when the car he was driving was struck by the north-bound Rangiora passenger train at the Sawyers arms road railway crossing. He was: John Howard Cawthron Britton, single, of «3 Mansfield avenue. Mr Britton was a maintenance worker at the Christchurch Airport. His mother lives in Napier. The train, which suffered only superficial damage, left the Papanui station at 449 p.m. and the accident occurred one minute later. The car was extensively damaged on the right-hand side. It was travelling towards Papanui when the accident happened. The railway line was not damaged. The train, which was pulling four carriages and a guards’ van. was delayed for 35 minutes. A later service to Rangiora was delayed for 10 minutes. The driver of the car was taken to the Christchurch Hospital by ambulance but was found to be dead on arrival. Mr Britton was taken to the Christchurch Hoopital by ambulance but was found to be dead on arrival.
