FAVOURITE GUARDED
Trainer Sleeps At Stables The 1963 New Zealand Trotting Cup favourite, Vanderfcrd. is under guard at the stables ot his trainer, Mr A. J. Bourne, at Woolston. Mr Bourne has been sleeping at the stables, a mile away from his home, for the last 10 days. The stables are fairly isolated, and Mr Bourne has a caravan there. “There is no truth whatsoever in the rumour which has been circulating for the last fortnight that an attempt was made to nobble Vanderford,” Mrs Bourne said last evening. “One of the horses in our stable did die of an illness, but there was nothing suspicious about it,” she said. “In fact, we have seen nothing suspicious at all, but Alf sleeps down at the stables because he would only worry sleeping at home. “He is taking no chances at all. Vanderford is fit and well, and sleeping better than my busband.” Mrs Bourne said she was extremely glad that it was cup day today. “I am not a grass widow; I am a race widow. I shall be pleased when it is all over, and delighted if the favourite comes home,” she commented.
