' N.Z. HERALD’ CENTENARY

Grant Of Arms Awarded (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 10. The “New Zealand Herald" has been awarded a grant of arms, under the authority of the Earl Marshal (the Duke of Norfolk). The letters patent were recently issued in London to Wilson and Horton, proprietors of the newspaper. The award coincides with the centennial of the “New Zealand Herald,” which was first published on November 13. 1863. The arms were drawn up at the College of Arms, London. The costs involved were met by the 900 members of the staff of Wilson and Horton, Ltd., as a centennial gift to the company. On Saturday the letters patent were handed to Mr M. A. Pattison, chairman of the board of directors of die company. The presentation was made on behalf of the staff by Mr J. Farrelly, a member of the newsroom printing staff. More than 800 persons attended a cocktail party at the Manhattan ballroom, where the presentation was made. As a centennial gift from the company, Mr Pattison announced a special distribution of £12.000 to be added to the balances in the staff provident fund and a centennial bonus which would be based on service with the company.
