Election Enrolments Below Expectations

WELLINGTON, Nov. 11. Enrolments for the General Election are below expectations. For the 76 European constituencies there are 1,282,596 on the rolls, an increase of 27,108 on 1960. The Maori total of 49,256 shows an increase of 789. It appeared that the public had not responded as well as expected to appeals to enrol, said a spokesman for the Electoral Office. Neither the European nor the Maori enrolment had increased as much as expected on the basis of birth-rate and in the case of Europeans the net gain from immigration. The largest roll total in any constituency is in Waatemata, with 19,605 registered electors, and the smallest is Southern Maori with 10,301.
