OMBUDSMAN STUDY
Police Violence Aftermath (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, November 11. The appointment of an ombudsman in Britain to make independent inquiries into charges of police violence is under study, the “Daily Mail’’ said today. The Home Secretary (Mr Brooke) was considering the idea. The police scandal at Sheffield, which resulted in dismissals and suspensions, had caused anxiety, the newspaper said. Worry was concentrated on damage done to police-public relations by the Sheffield scandal and a succession of other allegations about police conduct. At present complaints of police violence are investigated by the chief constable of the area concerned. The “Daily Mail” said discussion of the proposal might take place when Mr Brooke submitted a police bill to the House of Commons shortly.
