N.Z. Ploughman In Canada

IfR C. E. READ, at West Melton, was only a little more than four points behind this year’s world champion ploughman at the recent world ploughing match in Canada. He gained 290.82 points to fill seventh place. The winner, Yngve Mansson, of Sweden, scored 294.94 points. Writing from Guelph in Ontarto, Mr Read says that the world championships were held in the Caledon district, about 45 miles from Toronto. The 'ontest site was Conne Smythe Farms, a property of 1700 acres. The world contest was held in conjunction with the Ontario and Canadian championships

and over four days a total of almost 700 plots were ploughed. A big fair was also held in conjunction with the match and the fair and trade exhibits, known as the tented city, covered an area of at least 60 acres.

Stubble land was ploughed on the first day of the world match. This was slightly undulating land of a very sandy nature with stubble about four inches high and in places a fairly heavy green growth about five to six inches high. The grass plots on the second day were fairly fiat. The ground was again fairly free and sandy and the growth was cocksfoot about three to four inches high with a sprinkling of lucerne. There were 33 competitors. The weather was beautifully fine throughout and about 40.000 people attended on both days and were transported around the plots by a large fleet of tractors and trailers.
