Cardigan Bay In Splendid Trial

Cardigan Bay and Robin Dundee advanced their preparations for the New Zealand Cup on Tuesday when they worked over two miles in company with Morano Boy yesterday. Rain was falling when they worked, but the track was not affected. However, there was a cold, southerly wind. They worked about 15 feet out from the rails.

Cardigan Bay went away a length and a half in front of Morano Boy, with Robin Dundee one second behind the pace-maker. Robin Dundee moved up on the outside of Morano Boy inside the last three furlongs, but Cardigan Bay continued to pace easily in front and won the trial by three lengths from Robin Dundee, which was finishing on strongly. Morano Boy was five lengths further back without being knocked about. Cardigan Bay recorded 4min 21sec for the two miles, the last half-mile in Imin 1 4-ssec. and the final quarter in 30 2-ssec.. He took 2min 13 l-ssec for his opening mile. Cardigan Bay, the backmarker on 54 yards in Tuesday's £7OOO race, could not have been more impressive. He was working comfortably all the way and did not blow at all on pulling up. He looks a very fit horse and is certain to be the hardest to beat on a good track on Tuesday. Robin Dundee, too, went well and should be improved by the run. Her Gore trainer. J. Walsh, has never had her looking more robust. Morano Boy went well for a horse in his class. He has had an easy time since racing at Oamaru last month, and should be all the better for the run. Most of the other horses were restricted to jogging work. Blue Prince was exercised by his trainer. P. Stewart. He arrived on Thursday and looks in great heart for the cup, a race in which he finished third to Lordship and Falsehood 12 months ago. The Frankton reinsman, F. Smith, will drive Blue Prince on Tuesday. The Mangere three-year-old, Full Sovereign, is ex-

pected to arrive in Christchurch this morning. He is in the Riccarton Stakes on Tuesday, but bis main mission will be the New Zealand Derby Stakes on November 20. when night trotting will be introduced ait Addington.

Classic Over 11 Furlongs? (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Nov. 8. The Auckland Trotting Club may become the first dub in the world to run a derby classic race at less than the traditional mile and a half. Because of the position of its mile and a half barrier on a bend at Alexandra Park, the club wants to run its Great Northern Pacing Derby on December 31 over 11 furlongs.
