POLICE IN BRITAIN
Moves For One Force (Special Crspdt. N.Z.PA.) LONDON, Nov. 8. The special inquiry into the conduct of two Sheffield detectives, which found them "undoubtedly guilty of madiciously inflicting grievous bodily harm" on prisoners in custody, is expected to have wide effects. What opposition there was to greater Government control of police forces outside London is expected to be reduced. It is likely that provisions giving the Home Secretary greater control of the police will be detailed in a Bill which will be foreshadowed in the Queen’s Speech at the opening of the new session of Parliament next Tuesday. One of -the most controversial changes will deal witfi the transfer of responsibility for the efficient functioning of police forces from local committees to the Home Secretary. Another will give power for chief constables to be dismissed for inefficiency. A third will be the right to demand from chief constables reports on the day-to-day administration of local police forces.
