ATHLETICS D. Dixey Has Easy Win In Three-Mile Event

The former Canterbury mile champion, D. Dixey, running in South Canterbury colours, had a convincing win in the open three-mile event in the inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. Dixey, who recorded 14min 37.25ec, opened up such a gap after the second lap that he was virtually racing alone for the remaining 10 laps.

R. Allen (High School Old Boys), who was almost threequarters of a lap behind with three laps to go, found the strength to reduce the lead over the last halfmile, but Dixey won as he liked, with the field well spread behind him. The most gruelling event was the 15-mile handicap road race. D. Puckett, a brother of the former national marathon champion, R. Puckett, was the only runner to beat the A grade standard of 86 minutes with a time of Ihr 24min 27sec. The race was won by R. Lloyd (Anglican), who from 27min behind go, recorded Ihr 33min 28sec.

Christ's College runners did particularly well in the under age events. The club produced a good crop of quarter milers in the under 17 and junior races. In the junior B grade event H. Young recorded the good time of 53.7 sec, G. Cooke was timed at 55.35ec in the C grade race and E. Pearson, a very determined stylist won the under 17 B event in 55.95ec. A. Whyte (St Andrew’s College) produced a strong finishing burst in the second section of the junior B 440 yards for an excellent 53.1 sec.

University’s D. Mackenzie won both the open 75 yards and 220 yards and until his club-mate, A. Steel, decides to make an appearance Mackenzie will continue to have things his own way in the sprints. G. Abercrombie, (Toe H), who has recorded some very good sprint times in Auckland, won his section of the 220 yards, but, as in his earlier appearance this season, he looked a little sluggish. B. Teen (Marist), the interschools’ sprint champion, ran in the senior C grade 220 yards and won convincingly in 23.35ec.

In the women’s relay Technical lost all chance of

victory at the first baton change when R. Albrett, overstretched herself when passing the baton and, as she fell, the heel of the next runner struck her on the shoulder. Miss Albrett lay stunned on the ground for a few minutes, buit she later recovered. Abbreviations used in the results: University (U 3. Technical (T.), Toe H (TH.).
